Honestly, who nowadays doesn’t watch at least one reality TV show from time to time? It seems as if there is nobody that would admit to at least not occasionally tuning into the drama filled phenomenon sweeping across our country. Reality TV or as it is in most cases “reality” is really not as things are edited out so much. People who watch these shows tend to watch them and believe that everything on them is real and that it wouldn’t be able to be scripted and tend to not see the fact that things are edited in the shows.
Take for example, the “Real World”, which I will admit I have been addicted to for many years, which is filled with drama which seems to be ongoing in the house. There are always problems or amazing things that are happening to everybody on the show. They tend to leave out all the time in which people are merely laying around or relaxing, doing nothing but rather chose to depict the “Real” world to be something that is always filled with some dramatic event. Of course the show is based on picking, “Seven strangers to live in a house, work together and have their lives taped to find out what happens when people stop being polite and start getting real.” That has been on the beginning of every show since it started. But is it really a good depiction of the real world? I don’t think so. People and yes I admit I am one of them, tune in every week to see what is going on in pure strangers lives and it is interesting, but to be honest when I think about it, I don’t know why I am hooked!
Another show that I am addicted to is the Bachelor, but in reality who can have 20 women fighting for them and go on group dates, spending very little time with a person and be able to purpose to them in a matter of a few weeks? The scenario is still able to wrap me up and engage me as they go on glamorous dates and all around the world. As the article talked about, women are more likely to watch reality TV shows, but they also see the “real” world through some “fake” way. It is a little bit depressing when you see someone get swept off their feet and taken to some exotic country and treated like a queen after knowing a guy for a few weeks and then coming home to your boyfriend and sitting on a couch and watching TV or something like that.
As we talked about in class, it’s not just soap operas that have unrealistic portrayals of reality but even the “reality” TV shows that have the unrealistic things that occur on a regular basis. It sets up false hope in many cases for people which can lead to many problems in the world. We will just have to see where producers of the shows will go next and what the next new sensation will be on the “reality” shows.
